Jan
Matejko, 1838 - 1893
Painting attained its greatest development in the second half of the 19th century, representing styles
developing at that time in western Europe, but again with specific national characteristics. The greatest
fame was achieved by Jan Matejko, creator of monumental, romantic historical
canvases.
Jan Matejko was Poland's greatest historical painter. At a time when
Poland was partitioned, so ceased to exist as a nation, Matejko's work
expressed strong patriotic feelings. He became a kind of substitute King
of Poland. His meticulous research, historical vision, realistic portrayal
of his subjects, particularly human figures, together with massive
canvases, combine to produce an overwhelmingly powerful effect.

I was surprised to discover how little information I found about Jan
Matejko. I thought he would be widely represented. This is most probably
because, Poland is still working hard to put information about the
culture, art and painting on-line. I am sure that in the next few years we
will find more.
